Sport Wagons
A collection of images which I have run across. Attributed where I could. [Comments added...I couldn't resist!] R. Kwas
A number of designers have tried their hand at such a package...some that work in the design department of car companies, some work in their own back yard with a plasma torch and Bondo. The drivetrain of the Volvo version was nothing out of the ordinary...it used the fuel injected version of the slightly enlarged (from 1788cc-B18 to 1990cc-B20) "redblock" of fame and lore, but it was arguably a pretty sharp evolution of the original Pelle Peterson design.
I'm not suggesting that the 1800ES was the first or the best, but in the writer's opinion, I do think that Volvo got it quite right, taking the original design a step further, and getting two more years of life out of it! [...and there is no such thing as a PV1800ES...sorry!...adding as many letters as you can to the model designation doesn't make it any cooler!! ]

1972-73 1800ES
Here are some other auto manufacturer's (and also backyard mechanic) designer's attempts at making a "Sport Wagon"...
...in the opinion of the writer, some more successful/attractive than others...!
Some "Factory" Versions:

Porsche 928

Porsche 924
...looks like James Garner(†), the well-known gearhead, driver and actor, seems to like this Firebird wagon...I don't know about that caboose on there...and I don't think "The Bandit" would have been caught dead in one...!

Aston Martin Sport Wagon looks sharp!
[But I don't think the back glass would have been bulletproof!]
Some "One-off" versions:
With that big rear-window, it looks like an ES at first glance, but something is not quite right! At second glance, its apparently a Reliant Scimitar GTE [I find it amusing that ANY British car, with their Lucas electrics, be named Reliant, clearly derived from the root word "reliable"]. I prefer the ES!...partly for the design, partly for the Bosch electrical reliability!

It looks like someone has had their way with a Mustang...and it actually turned into a quite reasonable grocery-getter!

Triumph TR6 based sport-wagon (probably also a one-off, and not from the factory).

...a "private" version [...and some things should be kept private...! This is what happens when you have a Corvette shell and a pick-up truck cover, too much fiberglass, Bondo, and time on your hands...it's an automotive shotgun wedding!]:

Older Corvette... possible AI horsepucky!

Newer Corvette...at least the "trunk" will hold more than a pair of driving gloves!

Datsun Z car...interesting...!

Ford Thunderbird
...I prefer Volvo's version!

...as a matter of fact, I like all of their wagons better...I've owned four out of those six!!

Question: What the hell is a "shooting brake"??
